Phoenix 2 Clinch the 2nd Division Title Match Report Phoenix 2 vx Phoenix 3 (17-5) (18/3/07) The scoreline will suggest a comfortable win, but I think P3 can take a lot of credit from the game as we had to work very hard for our scores and victory. A victory that makes us winners of Division 2 and promoted with 2 games to spare. Congratulations to all those involved 9(more of that later). As for the match, it was a great learning curve for the 2 Chris' in particular who played very well. Our experience at times counted and also taking the shots when available, being more composed when shooting and creating good feeds, with well timed passes and runs and having strong collects are all things I felt P2 did well on Thursday. What was also pleasing was that even being an intra club game, we were very competitive all the way through and as sport should be, a good, hard and fair game (thanks to Dave Hodge for my individual battle) well reffed, which was really good to be apart of. Further pleasing from P2's point of view was that having got off to a blistering start and no team should lose from a position of being 5-0 up, we kept up with the high tempo. When after half time, the Division of Chris, Christina, Paul and Adam, lost the ball too easily and too often in attack, causing me to perhaps for the first time this season, really have a go at a division, Christina in particular pulled them together and then got things sorted. The response was exactly as required and as the scorecard will show, plenty of players got on the scoresheet. My division of Dave Hollingsbee, Diana, Lucy P and myself also changed things in the second half, with the girls taking over more in attack. This is important as we do need to ensure that we have goals from all players and that are attacks are varied to keep the opposition guessing. We all (me included more so than others) need to take our turns in collect, but I felt that we did mix up quite a bit with the long passes being very effective with good follow up runs into attacking positions that led to a number of goals. I should also apologise to Dave for not letting him have a late penalty and give him a chance of getting on the scoresheet, but it just did not register. Or in other words, with reference to last Sunday, look around next time you are buying drinks in the pub and don't blank me, then somehow I might remember these things come match day!!! Finally, we have to have a moment of the match and this would be Coz, when she overplayed her support to P3, by actually turning the scorecard over for them after one of our goals. So, we have won promotion, we have a title and we have a chance of getting a 100% record, to keep our interest sky high for the remaining 2 games. We also need to remember we are building for next season as we will have job on our hands to stay in that division, so we need to continue to work at our game. I would like to thank all the players of P2 for this achievement and they can be broken down to 4 types. The P1 players who whenever we have called on them have always played with the right attitude and purpose The P2 regulars and not so regulars, who have consistently performed Those who are trying to hold down a place and who when called upon have always done a good job and made selections not an easy process for Coz and I The others in the club, as P3 showed tonight. There are plenty of players who only play occasionally for P2 and even not at all, but the standard they are capable of playing at is forcing others above them to raise their game. And thanks to Coz for splitting her duties to P2 and P3 on the night, but for giving me the help I needed before the game. Well done all, our achievement is one for the Club. Adrian |
